The sun rose slowly in the east, casting its rays over the treetops and finding its way between the branches of the immense cedar, elm and spruce trees that made up the large Eastern Forest. A lone wolf awoke to a cheeky robin trilling in a low hanging limb above him. His ears flicked back in irritation and he leaped snapping his jaws but catching nothing. The bird seemed to laugh at him as it flew away on a light breeze. Iago sat back on his haunches with a slight growl. A piece of golden sun flashed across his auburn fur, lighting it up with streaks of darkest ebony. A wide slash of black ran from his nose, down his back and ended along his full tail. He was an attractive red hewolf, but one that seemed plagued with misfortune. Nothing was going his way anymore...not that it ever had. Flicking his tail in an agitated circle he rose onto his paws and turned to face away from the sun. He knew the sun came up in the east. So to get out of this accursed forest, he needed to head west. Days of walking and he still hadn't reached the edge. The trees weren't even thinning out. He set up a howl of frustration that rang through the oppressive woods. The trees pushed in suffocating him with their closeness. He had to get out of here. Setting off at a fast pace, his long strides carried him farther away from his past, and hopefully closer to his future.

A couple days after the encounter with Thorn and Dezari, Cher was on an expedition. She was getting tired of the monotony in the pack anyway... It was more fun to run wild in the woods and find new and exciting game. The sun drenched her back with warmth and the feeling of security. This place was much more relaxing than the alpines. Crickets sang here and there every once in a while. Birds chirped their cheerful songs. In a nearby swamp, frogs croaked to each other. A smile spread across her face, and she trotted onward. She had no idea if there were any packs around, but she felt there must be. Either way, she was not afraid of them. They would never dare to hurt a lonely shewolf.
When her ears caught sound of the howl, she immediatly picked up the pace. Finding a mate away from home might be easier anyway. When she spotted the red wolf prancing away, she trotted close to his side, flashing a fang in his direction. "Do you abide in a pack around here?" she asked, interested.

Iago flashed the newcomer an irritated glance. "No," his reply came bluntly. Continuing through the trees, he suddenly turned and stared down the shewolf. "Wait..." he leaned close and sniffed her fur. "You've been out of these woods, haven't you? Do you know the way out of the horrid forest?" He waited with a solemn face, his body rigid with stress and tension. Getting out of this forest was his main priority. His gaze traveled across the body of the lean-looking shewolf. 'Hm,' he thought to himself. 'She's pretty, but not a red wolf...disappointing. Oh well, I'm not in the mood at the moment. Maybe if she can help me out. I do hate asking for help, but in this case...' Iago blinked slowly and shooed aside his thoughts. It wasn't worth bothering with. She probably wouldn't be interested in him anyway. He waited quietly for her answer.

Cher smiled. The rough type. She didn't care if he was a red wolf. She thought he was cute, to say the least.
"I do know the way out." She replied teasingly. "Why does your attitude reveal anger?" She asked. "And why do you think this forest is horrid? I think it is absolutely beautiful!" She said, dancing in circles in front of him. She was acting like a cub, but she didn't mind. She was away from her home. Nobody had to know how she was acting. She liked the feeling. She could do whatever and no one was around to judge her. She didn't have to prove herself to anyone.

Watching the shewolf's antics, he was stunned at her directness. "Anger?" he replied slowly, "Not likely, mere irritation..." Iago felt the lie pass from his mouth, and he bit down on it. "Perhaps anger. I loathe the forest because it reminds me of things I detest." Glazing over, his eyes took on a far away look. It was so easy to remember 'that' when he was surrounded by trees and the calls of the animals of the woods. Shaking his head to clear away the cobwebs of the past, he smiled at the shewolf. Figuring that if he could charm her, she might lead him out, he gave her a vigorous tail wag. "Hm, I didn't catch your name, shewolf," he inquired, "I claim the name Iago, and as I'm sure you're aware, I am of the blood-kin of the red wolves." He repressed a shudder as his tongue slipped into the lilting speech of his ancestors. A past is something impossible to run from. 'Maybe,' he thought, 'Maybe I need a shewolf that isn't of my kind. Someone new, that doesn't dredge up old memories.' Looking closely at the shewolf yet again, his eyes raked up and down. Liking what he saw, but not wanting to admit it, he gave her another smile instead. One that was sincere this time. With a hint of his dry humor, Iago bowed slightly. "If you could show me the way out, I would be indebted to you."

Cher smiled bluntly. "Iago? What a strange name..." she replied. And indeed it was, to the grey wolves, anyway. "I did ntoice that you were a red wolf by your pelt and fur. It differs sligtly from my own." Her mind started to drift into sheer wonder about what he meant.
It reminds me of things I detest...
At his smile, she couldn't help but to grin as well. "My name would be Cher. And I would be delighted to show you the way out. But you must tell me where you wish to go." She said innocently. What would her alpha think of her if she brought a red wolf mate home? Would theey perhaps shun her, or would everything turn out okay? Then she shook her head. Don't start counting eagles until they hatch... she reminded herself.

Iago thought upon what Cher had proposed. Where did he want to go? He wasn't really sure anymore. 'Anywhere but here!" he thought. 'But then would she lead me to another forest? I wish to go somewhere with...open places and wolves that treat you as kin, even if you aren't. Selfish thoughts, but true nonetheless.' Iago sized up Cher again. "Where did you come from?" He began pacing back and forth. He wanted companionship, but was frightened of it too. He had trusted his heart to those closest to him before and had watched them tear it to ghostly little fragments. He despised them, and they had gotten exactly what they deserved. His lips pulled back in a silent snarl that twisted his face into something surreally cruel. Realizing that she was staring at him, he composed himself. "I really don't care where the wind takes me, as long as it's far from here. Do you have someplace in mind to take me?"

"Well, the places without forests are the field, the mountains, or the shores... whichever you choose. I came from the alpines. Don't you smell the pine in my fur?" She put her own nose to her fur and inhaled. The smell of the pine made her think she was back at her homelands. But of coarse, she was hoping he didn't want to go to the alpines. She needed to be away from them for a while maybe until the smell in her fur was almost gone.
She wondered how long it had been since the red wolf had last eaten. She still hadn't eaten since her last encounter of rejection. ut she had better things to be doing, anyway.

Iago watched Cher's movements. His intuition served him well on a regular basis so he voiced his thoughts based on his instincts. "You don't wish to go back to the alpines, at least not yet." He thought out his choices. "What is this field like? It's open, right?" The slight pain in her eyes and voice pulled at him. 'Emotions,' he thought, 'And not ones of anger or frustration.' He laughed sarcastically to himself. 'That's new...' Looking back at the shewolf, he approached her cautiously and nudged her with his nose on her shoulder. Trying to be gentle, but falling quite miserably he said, "Take me to this field, I wish to see for miles around me. But first, I need to eat. Let's hunt." Flicking his tail in her face he stopped to listen to the inner pulsing of the forest. It made his skin crawl, but it was necessary. He picked out the sound of a hare several yards away. A short run and leap would suffice. With an efficient stalking move, he inched closer, than gave a bound and leaped upon the unsuspecting prey. Twisting its neck in his jaws, he moved back to Cher. Grudgingly he threw the hare down at her feet and moved to find something else to hunt.
Minutes later he found a mouse and devoured it quickly. It was just his luck that everything else seemed to have been scared away by the scuffle with the measly morsel of meat. He supposed that was all he was getting for awhile. Turning back to Cher, he waited for her to finish eating.

Iago's change of heart made Cher feel a bit more welcome. The hare lay lifeless beneath her, with only a few fang marks drilled into it. The smell aroused her senses and saliva started to run in her mouth. She grabbed hold of the hare's flank, ripping her morsel off, and chewing it only a few times before gulping it down. Ahh, precious lapine meat... it was so good to the taste buds... After she ate her fill, all that was left was the head and feet. Everything else was now in her stomach. She then realized her quickness to devour the small beast, and worried that maybe she should have left it for him. Either way, she quickly changed the subject.
"The field is miles wide," she replied, "and if you wanted to, you could run forever. When in the middle, you can't even see the border of trees. Only the rolling green hills and the faded blue skies. There's a lot of game out there as well, but it's kind of hard to catch anything. There are basically no hiding spots." She started to trot off as she talked, motioning for him to follow her, for she was now taking him to the field.

Falling into step beside her, Iago pondered upon everything that she had said. "You're running from something too," he spoke softly, not really expecting her to hear. Iago wasn't one to pry, mostly because he just didn't care, so he kept his thoughts to himself. Preferring silence, he walked along with a meditative expression.
((Urgh, bad post, but I'm trying to keep true to his character. He's not one to just spill his guts, or even ask what another is thinking. He's the silent, brooding type. lol))

Open mouthed, the shewolf kept trotting. Her earstwitched at his new soft-spoken words, and she replied with a hint of sarcasim. "Aren't we all?"
Her hopes of coming back with a mate slowly dissolved as she now realized that she like her and Iago's relationship as it was. Maybe somewhere in the future they would be together, but as of now, she liked how mellow things were.
Off she loped, with him following behind. They were going to a new place now.
(Make a post in the middle field whenever you like.)
