The night was almost over. Shadows were still casted over the town, and it was still very dark. The blue-black sky, with it's silver studded stars and cold chilling winds, was slowly brightening as dawn was approaching. The moon shone over the broken buildings and their dingy brick coats, slowly fading away with the night. Nothing was moving. There was no sound.
Around a broken building was a flock of crows, each pecking on the same rotten carcass that was lying on the ground. These were the birds that were too afraid to actually go out to catch their own food. One large crow stepped back for a moment, with a mouse ran across his view. He jumped into the air and did a short dive toward the creature. As his beak closed in on it, a huge beast come around the corner. The rest of the flock scattered. Its eyes struck fear into the bird, and the mouse got away. The fangs sank into the crow...
It screeched in terror, but was quickly dead. The dog quickly gulped it down, beak and all, then looked around with her stunning ice eyes. tail hung low, and her ears flicked back.
This town is useless... the food is too scarce. The water is bad. I don't know how these dogs live here like this... I should get out of here and live with my real brothers and sisters... I am Kioto! I shouldn't have to live like this.

Stalking down the streets this early in the morning, Andy could tell that something was here. The crows didn't usually startle like that, not unless a stray like himself provoked them. They were becoming far too bold, the carrion were, always hanging around. Constant calling when they come upon a fresh and dead dog, asking for it to be broken open by something stronger then they. Sad thing was, some were more then willing to oblige. As food grew scarcer, cannibalisms was not such an uncommon thing.
Andy thought again of the forest, a forbidden place, like, where the wolves feasted. That was the general viewpoint of many, which was why some believed they grew so big. And why many held malice whenever a wolf so happened to stroll down the streets. That, as well, was becoming uncommon. Not even a wolf could take on a city of judgmental and starving dogs. Mutts.
Andy could hear the creature now, the thing that startled the birds, and he could smell the sent of fresh blood. His stomach churned hungrily, and he hoped desperately that it was not dog-meat his mouth watered for. And also that feeding dog would be willing to share. What were the odds of that? An intimidating alsation Andy was, with his share of victories, but he wasn't sure he wanted a tiff. Not now, in the dark. [/size]

Kioto sat on her haunches, staring down at the few drops of blood left from her recent catch. It stained the pavement. She looked up to the top of the broken building towering beside her. There the crows that she had startled perched. They looked down at her with their beady eyes, occasionally glancing at the rotted meat they had been feasting on. Kioto turned her head to gaze at the rotten carcass close to her. Who knows what it could have been. It was to distorted to tell.
"How could you wretched birds sink so low?" she asked, barely so the birds could hear her.
She shook her head, raising herself off of the ground and turning the opposite way. Then something caught her nose. It was another dog, perhaps. Her ears turned back. These days, no one knew who was on their side. It was difficult to tell if he was a threat or not.

The carrion were silent, but that did not mean peace. It only meant the mutt from before had not left, and that he was walking into a possible ambush. This did not really concern him, however. Not really, anyway.
Andy moved around the corner swiftly, not pausing to quibble over possibilities. He saw the dog, who looked like a wolf, and forced his ears to stay up. He could not stop his fur from poofing defensively, but this was only expected, and Andy had given up trying to fight it.
So Andy moved right up to this new creature, breaking the barrier of weariness but never crossing the line of respectability.

Kioto, suprised as she was, stood her ground. Never had another dog approached her so casually. She tilted her head but didn't move her eyes anywhere. An uncontrolable growl emerged from her throat, but it only lasted for a minute, and then died down. Here piercing eyes looked at the new male which she had never seen before.
"Who are you?" she asked quietly. "What business do you have here?" She had never seen a beautiful German shepherd, and he was one that the humans had bred. Humans... such a word made her tremble. No one ever really spoke of them anymore.

Andy waited patiently until the other settled, intimidated by her growl but amused by her words.
"This land belongs to no one owner now, oh-my-sister, nor shall it ever." He stalked forward cautiously, trembling on the edge of what he thought would be a threatening distance, though he held no malice. Only a kind, but smirking and watchful eye. He paused again, offering no tail wag, but only a small head bob.
"But I'm Andy."

She contemplated his words. "It has been that way for quite some while, now," she replied. "Those that lived with the humans back then are very elderly, and most of them are dead." She stood up and watched them. "No dog knows who to trust. Finding a friend is a grand thing indeed. But learning to trust them is a whole new game in itself. Who are you, and why have you approached me? Did you smell crow's blood, or are you looking for friendship?"

Andy listened to her, watching carefully, his expression unreadable. He gave a polite little growl, and readjusted his weight to one side. His quarter-docked tail gave a half wag, and he lowered his ears slightly as he gave his quiet reply.
"I did smell the crow blood, and it made me hungry. I expected to see no friendly face."
He gave a little shrug, ignoring her question as to who he was and what he wanted. Only repeating: "My name is Andy." He licked his lips, hoping she would share her own name.

((OOC: Oops! I didn't realize I said 'who are you' twice. lol Sorry!))
Kioto smiled, and relaxed herself. "Catching crows is pathetic, right?" She shook her head. "I don't blame you. I would go running to the smell of fresh blood if I were you too. Darn this wretched town... there is no good food here, and I'm so underweight. But I refuse to eat to rotted animals that are lying around, unlike some dogs I have seen. I won't sink that low."
Her ears perked up, and she looked at him. "And now I'm rambling. Forgive my manners. My name is Kioto."

Andy nodded. "Most are starving." He said matter-of-factly, but not unkindly. Dogs died in the streets, or just stopped, too weak to go on. He himself was not a whole lot more then bones, and his once lush coat was turning to tatters. His family would laugh at him could they see him, for they stayed fat and beautiful as the city crumbled around them.
"I guess just consider yourself lucky."
Andy thought it safe now to relax his muscles, and moved forward now to exchange a sniff with this Kioto, touching noses lightly.

Kioto remained in her position as they sniffed, ears fluttering back lightly. When he moved back, she loosened. Her eyes closed and she reminicsed of the times that the city was plentiful with food. Such memories made her sad. She was lucky she was born with wolven blood. If she wasn't, like Andy, she wondered how she would make it.
"I guess some of us are lucky..." she replied. "...but most of us just have to be smart." She sat on her haunches and looked up at where the crows perched.
"--like the wolves."
Her own words suprised herself. She never usually spoke of her ancestors under normal circumstances. However, she waged that these days, nothing was normal.

like the wolves Andy's eyes flashed for a brief moment at her words, then returned to their normal blase tone. A wolf. Like her. He wasn't so blind that he couldn't tell. Not fully wolf, maybe, but she did have something about her that was in no way a dog. It wasn't unusual to find one like her, part wolf part...stray, but it wasn't normal to see one that looked it.
"They are the hungriest ones of all." He said smoothly, giving his tail a short beat on the ground behind him.

Kioto glanced at him for a brief moment. "How do you say such things?" A sad expression started to overcome her face. Her blue eyes reflected a bird that flew by in the emty, echoing streets. Pavemet... if there was anything she hated more than rotted food, it would be pavement. It was such a waste. Why do the humans feel so compelled to put pavement on such a perfect, untouched piece of land?
She turned away. "If anyone is eating better than us, it is the wolves. How can you say they are the hungriest?"

Andy felt he was losing her, and jumped up quickly when she turned away. She was the first creature he had been able to hold any conversation with, no matter how short, in such a long time.
But he would not back down on his statement.
"It was meant as no offense, dear, no offense at all. But you have to admit it's true. I felt the hunger as nothing but a dog when you killed that crow. Them, though. They feed off of that feeling, which is what makes them so powerful." So frightening, he thought, but decided againt that last bit.

Irritated by the upstart little wolf, Cassius nudged him out of his path. "Move aside pup, I want to explore a little more. This place rings of danger, but we'll be careful." Throwing a smirk over his shoulder, Cassius's voice dripped with sarcasm, "Unless you want to stay here...alone." Without another backward glance, Cassius rounded the corner of the squat, brick building. Briefly, he saw his reflection in a piece of window still holding onto the peeled pane. Although he wished to deny it, he could see his own fear within the eyes looking back. Perhaps this wasn't the best idea. A gentle distance down the alley, two forms sat in what seemed a less than relaxed situation. One of them had to be the mix he had scented. Wishing to avoid any confrontation, he approached with sure steps, and a warning whuff. Realizing that the mix was a female, and that her companion was a male dog, his curiosity increased. He's never seen a dog before either. Coming within a safe distance, he leaned back on his haunches and gave his tail an inviting wag. Not being really sure about how things worked within this broken city, he decided to introduce himself. "I'm Cassius. I scented you two from the outskirts and was interested in meeting you..." Their expressions seemed cold, and Cassius's heart plunged. Tensing himself to run, he waited for any sort of reply.
